The King's Shilling Billboard

The King’s Shilling is an online only store selling the very best 28mm historical miniatures for tabletop wargaming.

Our objective for the business is quite simple – we want The King’s Shilling to be the best independent retailer of 28mm historical wargames miniatures in the UK before expanding overseas. To do that we have to become the premier independent one-stop-shop for those of us that are interested in collecting and gaming with 28mm historical figures.

Initially we are releasing the excellent ranges from Warlord Games, Perry Miniatures, Victrix and Fireforge Games. Later we are hoping to add other great designers until we have the most comprehensive range of 28mm figures, terrain, rules and accessories available for every conceivable historical period.

We aim to provide not only great products at great prices, but along side that valuable resources for gamers, collectors, painters etc. backed up with amazing customer service and the Wow Factor that will enable us to build genuine, lasting relationships with our customers.

Our approach to business is quite simple, customer satisfaction is paramount. It may take time for us to get where we want to be, so please bear with us, but we will get there. Until we do though, if there is anything you would like to say to us, anything you think we can do better, or any specific products you would like us to provide then please do get in touch.

Steve Hezzlewood’s Designs

The original idea behind setting up The King’s Shilling was to launch our own range of figures, based on the work of the late Steve Hezzlewood. Unfortunately right now, this is not looking too promising although we do have a number of master castings the master moulds are no longer viable meaning any ranges we could produce would be small and not up to the standard we would have liked.

Having said that, we do envisage a time when there are a range of TKS Miniatures also available via The King’s Shilling website, so for those that are interested please watch this space.

If you’re eager for the return of Steve Hezzlewood’s ACW and ECW ranges in 28mm or would like to share any memories you have of Steve’s designs then please drop us a line, we’d love to hear from you.

What is “The King’s Shilling”?

“The King’s Shilling”, in historical terms, was a recruiting technique used to lure the naive and unsuspecting into the British Army during the 18th and 19th Centuries. “To take the King’s Shilling” was essentially to join the Army for life – until you were too old, invalided out or killed in action.

Prospective recruits were offered The King’s Shilling as an inducement. A Shilling at the time was a significant sum of money and a recruiting sergeant would physically show you the money you could get simply for signing up. All too frequently, the adventurous minded as well as the poor and hungry would fall for what was essentially a scam. Yes you “earned” the Shilling for joining the army, but what they didn’t tell you was that almost all of it was taken away in deductions for equipment, food and “necessaries” prior to the new recruit ever seeing a penny. Unfortunately, despite the fact that all soldiers knew the scam because they had probably fallen for it themselves, new recruits only discovered this once they had already signed their lives away.

So like the British Army, is here to help you recruit new forces, build new armies and engage new enemies without bankrupting your economy. The only difference is that your new recruits are willing and ready to fight.
